Steps to Setup Your Bass Guitar Properly Like a Professional

how to setup your bass correctlyThe bass guitar has been widely misunderstood as a musical instrument. Many do not know the difference between a guitar and a bass guitar. However, these are two different instruments.

In that case, if you are a bassist, you should understand how to setup your bass guitar. This is not the same as setting up a guitar, so you should acknowledge the steps of doing it accurately.

This article will provide you with tips on how you can successful set your bass guitar in accordance to your style of playing.

6 Easy Steps to a Great Setup And Playable Guitar

1. Before starting, you need to keep your guitar clean. Afterwards, lay down your bass in a flat surface that can support it in full. To prevent the neck from falling, give a support below it using a rolled up towel. Then, remove the old strings. Make the strings floppy first by loosening the tuner and remove the whole string from the bridge. Do it for all of the strings in a row.

2. Take advantage of this chance to clean the neck and fret board of the bass guitar. Since the strings are off, you can access these parts more easily. However, you should research first on the cleaning material that fits the wood of your guitar. For maples and rosewoods, it would be better to use lemon oil.

3. When the body of your bass is already clean, put on the new strings in the bridge. You should start with the thickest string and put it in place on the bridge. When you have measured the correct length, you can now cut it first before tightening the tuner. Finish adding all of the strings so that you can proceed on how to setup your bass guitar for the first time.

adjusting your bass setups4. When the strings are already in place, adjust the pitch or the tune that it would produce. After that, you need to adjust the string height. Test by playing a single note. If your strings are buzzing afterwards, the height is not enough to support a good bass playing.

You can adjust this by using your truss rod. For more lift on the neck, you should turn the screw counterclockwise. Otherwise, the neck will have less lift. Also, remember that as you tighten the truss rod, the strings will have a greater tension. To ensure none of your strings is cut accidentally, make them floppy again.

5. Making modifications to the bridge. When you have successfully adjusted the truss rod, and you still cannot get the string height for your playing, you should now adjust the bridge saddles. This becomes necessary if your fret board do not follow the neck, or the strings you have used are of different categories. If the height looks fine for you after the adjustment in the truss rod, no need for this step.

6. Check the pickup height. Note that it should have a balanced distance from the bottom of the neck. It should be close enough to provide good notes, but is far enough to prevent the strings from touching the next during harder beats. As a rough estimate, you can use 4 mm as a guide. Remember too that the height should be equal for all strings.

Follow these steps on how to setup your bass guitar, and you can easily customize the instrument you love to play.
