Should I Get a Soft Gig Bag or Hard Casing for My Bass?

Taking care of your musical equipment is one of the most important things that you will have to do as a musician. The amount of care you put into your instrument can mean the difference between buying a replacement and having your bass guitar for years to come. If you take enough care of it, you can even have your bass guitar outlive you.

Not all care methods involve a ton of hard work. Some of them involve a one-time expense and can go a long way toward preserving the long term life of your bass guitar.

In this article, we will discuss one of the most common of these investments by going through the pros and the cons of the age old question; should I get a soft gig bag or a hard case?

So Which One Should You Get; A Gig Bag, Or a Hard Shell Case?

Well, that all depends on you.

If you are a travelling musician, and you keep a lot of gear in a truck or a van, your best bet may be to get a hard shell case. Likewise, if you have children who tend to get into things they aren’t supposed to (and we all know we used to see the words “don’t touch” as an omen to touch whatever the item may be), then you should also look into getting a hard shell case for your bass guitar.

If you play nightclubs a lot, or you play bars and other venues where you need to keep track of your gear to avoid the possibility of theft, you may want to get a gig bag, is you will be able to wear it across your back; and let’s face it, no one is going to steal the guitar off of your back. If they can, or they somehow do it without you noticing, they may have earned it (not really, but it would be very, very difficult to pull off).

If you travel a lot and you don’t have a very big vehicle, especially if your car or pickup is only a two-seater, you may want to consider a gig bag as well.

This is simply due to the fact that a gig bag is going to take up far less room than a bulky hard shell case. It will make travel more convenient, and you will be able to save a little bit of room for a couple of other necessary items.

In the end, the decision between buying a gig bag and getting a hard shell case all comes down to your lifestyle; do you have one that requires a gig bag, or do you have one that requires a hard shell case?
